Update from Avir: With the kids at Salaam Baalak Trust
Here's the school we just played at. it was pretty amazing. We had to travel deep into the heart of Mumbai. Cars barely fit. Street names are rumors. Eventually we found the school. It was brimming with what they refer to as "street kids". These kids are from all over the place, runaways or castaways or whatever. the school was started after Mira Nair's Salaam Bombay film. The school also doubles as a shelter for girls. They didn't let us take pictures or film. I think we might have snuck a picture or two. We brought an acoustic guitar and some pots and pans. We played some songs and then they sang some songs and we tried to keep the beat. Alan did a little Jason Anderson-esque interactive thing with them. The kids swarmed around us and our instruments. they looked at us with the curiosity i might have for an alien. We felt bad about leaving but we promised we'd come back and we gave them all our "email id's" and promised to remember their names. We were only supposed to be there for an hour but we stayed for three.

Quick update...
last nights show at zenzi was sickkkkk. im not just saying that. it was in this small sweaty room. it felt a lot like nara sushi in richmond va. there was no distortion on the amp here so i had to buy this shitty digitech distortion pedal. it sounds so 90s. it was like a d.i.y. show in the middle of india. we did a lot of jumping around and i ended up crawling on the bar by the end of our set. we took a lot of video so we'll try to upload some soon... i gotta run, we have to make our way to pune and we're already late. peeasssss

Bamboo Shoots, a rock band from the States, came to India for a marriage but have ended up with their first ever International tour

Dance rock, is an unheard genre in music. A five-member band from the US called Bamboo Shoots is ready to carve its niche in rock with the aid of synthesizers, samplers and other gizmos with dance rock. Shiv, the drummer of the band sheds light on the genre, "We love playing in clubs and re-creating a house party like atmosphere, with people dancing all around us. At the same time our sound is typically rock. So, dance rock is the best term to define our music."
The band brings this new flavour of music to town with a performance today which will be followed by a nation-wide tour over the next two weeks. Bamboo Shoots is made up of Avir (lead vocals, guitar) and Karl (backup vocals, bass and keyboards), Shiv (drums), Ankur (percussion) and Ahmed (guitar). Four out of the five members of the band are of Indian origin, but have been born and bred in the US.
The Indian influence in their music is subtle. "Our sound is like INXS meets Michael Jackson meets Jay Z. Our music has the global rock sound like INXS, the dance-feel of Michael Jackson's tracks and we compose music like rappers. We use dhols and other percussive instruments, but if you don't pay close attention you just might just miss it," says Shiv.
The band's trip to India originally, was not to perform, but to attend Shiv's marriage which was held last Sunday. Shiv has worked in India for a year, after completing his degree in micro finance from NYU. This is another Indian trait the band shares, all of them are well educated, or at least they have tried to be. Avir has done his pre-med from Brown University, Karl has majored in political science from the University of Maryland while Ankur started off with civil engineering, but didn't really see it through.
All of them now though have given up their careers for the band. Shiv has had an interesting heart-to-heart talk with his parents when he told them that he was going to give up a Wall Street career to pursue music. Shiv says, "They came to the States to make money and it seemed like I was doing just the opposite. They asked if I knew what I'm getting into and I said, ‘No’. But they have supported me and I suppose everything starts with a dream."
This is their first tour outside USA and Shiv believes it's just the beginning. They want to start travelling the world with their music. The band's sets are unique because they read a crowd before coming on stage. Shiv says, "I remember when we were playing with Plain White T’s, the entire crowd was made up of 13-15 year olds. We couldn't possibly play sensual tracks for kids who are still wearing their braces, I think its really important to read a crowd. You can also expect a lot of live impromptu stuff at the gig."

India Tour!
Hey everyone!
New York, NY. - March 26, 2009 – Epic Records Recording Artist Bamboo Shoots has announced it will tour India April 2-15. This tour marks the first time the band will perform in their “motherland.” Four out of the five members are of Indian descent, and the band’s debut album, produced by Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads, is infused with a subtle Indian influence. Many rock bands travel to India on the heels of major tours throughout Asia, but in a rare move for a young band, Bamboo Shoots has decided to actively build and cultivate an Indian fan base from a grassroots level prior to their debut record release.
The band consists of long-time friends Avir Mitra, Karl Sukhia, Shiv Puri, Ankur Patel and Ahmed Mahmoud. Although most of the members were born and raised in the United States, the members have a strong ancestral connection to India. The Indian media has already taken notice of the band as they have been interviewed by Rolling Stone India, Vogue India, and CNN India. A tour of this country will help solidify Bamboo Shoots’ presence in India.
In 2007 Bamboo Shoots won mtvU's Best Music On-Campus "Artist of the Year" contest and were subsequently signed to Epic Records and performed on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Their debut album, entitled Armour, will be released later this year.
The tour will include stops in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata and Bangalore.
